Tal día como hoy, el 1 de diciembre de 1971, John Lennon publicó en Estados Unidos, junto a Yoko Ono y The Plastic Ono Band, el single Happy Xmas (War is over), composición suya formulada en su día como canción protesta contra la guerra de Vietnam. En la grabación participó un coro infantil de Harlem.

Bajo el epígrafe de Plastic Ono Band fue publicada en single un mes después y llegó a alcanzar el nº 2 en Gran Bretaña, el nº 14 en Estados Unidos y se convirtió en un hit internacional y en un himno antibélico.

John Lennon, uno de los personajes más carismáticos e influyentes del siglo XX, icono mundial de la paz y la libertad, habría cumplido hoy 74 años. A día de hoy, sigue vivo en la memoria colectiva de todos nosotros.

"John Lennon tuvo un sueño siendo adolescente, y ese sueño ayudó a cambiar el mundo en las décadas de los sesenta y setenta del siglo pasado. Creó The Beatles y le dio música a un tiempo que nos ha alcanzado de lleno en la madurez de la historia de la música rock. Las balas estúpidas (¿alguna no lo es?) que lo apartaron de la vida la noche del 8 al 9 de diciembre de 1980 en Nueva York segaron una existencia que, a sus cuarenta años, se hallaba en la plenitud. Para muchos, en aquel amanecer del día 9 se terminó su juventud. Para otros, una nueva forma de leyenda se abrió paso en la dimensión de los inmortales... Todavía hoy, en cualquier manifestación pacifista o con intervención de las nuevas generaciones de jóvenes, se canta "Imagine" como himno de paz, protesta o testimonio. Todavía hoy sus canciones suenan como el fresco rocío de la mañana y su imagen parece la cotidiana y habitual de cada día, como si estuviera entre nosotros.
