En su aniversario natal recordamos al comediante, bailarín y cantante estadounidense Eddie Cantor con That's the kind of a baby for me (Harriman / Egan), composición que interpretó en su debut en Broadway en las Ziegfeld Follies de 1917 y grabó por primera vez ese mismo año. Tiempo después efectuó una nueva grabación en Inglaterra en diciembre de 1934 con la orquesta de Jay Wilbur, publicada en 1935 (la que aquí se ofrece).

En su aniversario natal recordamos a Eddie Cantor con esta secuencia de la película "Whoopee!" (1930), una de las primeras filmadas en Technicolor y que consagró como estrella al actor, cantante y entertainer estadounidense. La película era una adaptación de la comedia musical homónima estrenada dos años antes en Broadway con canciones de Walter Donaldson (música) y Gus Kahn (letra), producida por el legendario Florence Ziegfeld, que Cantor había protagonizado con gran éxito. El título del cantable, Makin' whoopee, es un eufemismo por intimidad sexual. Con los años se convirtió en un popularísimo standard que versionaron infinidad de famosos artistas (Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra, Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Marlene Dietrich, etc).

EDDIE CANTOR (New York City, US, 31-1-1892 / Beverly Hills, California, US, 10-10-1964): IN MEMORIAM

Hoy es aniversario natal del actor, cómico, cantante, bailarín y entertainer estadounidense Eddie Cantor. Conocido como "Banjo Eyes" por sus giros y movimientos de ojos, fue enormemente popular en su país desde la década de los años 20 hasta la de los 50. Se inició en el teatro y posteriormente pasó a la radio y después al cine y la televisión. Ganó una fortuna actuando en numerosos espectáculos de Florence Ziegfeld y se arruinó con el crash de la Bolsa en 1929, aunque triunfó en la pantalla  exhibiendo su humor estrafalario y se recuperó. Fue con el cine sonoro con el que se descubrió su voz lastimera, su forma de hablar inventiva y su maliciosa fantasía. En 1957 recibió un Oscar honorífico por sus servicios a la industria del cine.

Edward Israel Itzkowitz nació en el seno de una familia de judíos rusos emigrados a Nueva York. Su madre murió cuando él tenía un año y su padre cuando tenía dos, por lo que fue criado por su abuela materna. En su temprana adolescencia ganó concursos de talentos en teatros locales y así comenzaron sus apariciones escénicas. Uno de sus primeros empleos fue el de camarero y cantante en un local de Coney Island, mientras un joven Jimmy Durante le acompañaba al piano. Con quince años debutó en el vaudeville y diez años después fue contratado por Florenz Ziegfeld para uno de sus espectáculos. Cantor debutó en Broadway en las Ziegfeld Follies de 1917 y continuó en las de 1918, 1919, 1920, 1923 y 1927, además de otros espectáculos de variedades, como las comedias musicales Kid Boots (1923) o Whoopee! (1928), y fue asímismo un pionero de la radio. Entre las canciones que popularizó figuran That's the kind of baby for me (1917), You'd be surprised (1920), Margie (1921), I love her, she loves me (1922), If you knew Susie (1925), Ain't she sweet (1927), Makin' whoopee (1928), Yes, sir, that's my baby (1930) o My baby just cares for me (1930).

Su debut en el cine silente se produjo con Kid Boots (1923) de Frank Tuttle, comedia con Clara Bow basada en el musical del mismo nombre, y ya en el sonoro actuó en películas como Whoopee! (1930) de Thornton Freeland, adaptación del musical teatral que dos años antes había producido Ziegfeld, Un loco de verano (1930) de A. Edward Sutherland, comedia musical con Charlotte Greenwood, Torero a la fuerza (1932) de Leo McCarey, comedia con Robert Young, Escándalos romanos (1933) de Frank Tuttle, comedia con  Ruth Etting, El chico millonario (1934) de Roy Del Ruth, musical con Ann Sothern, George Murphy y Ethel Merman, ¿Hombre o ratón? (1936) de Norman Taurog, comedia musical con Ethel Merman y Sally Eilers, Adorables estrellas (1943) de David Butler, musical Warner con  Joan Leslie, Dennis Morgan, Edward Everett Horton y S. Z. Sakall, además de cameos de muchas de las estrellas del estudio, Su majestad la farsa (1944) de Edwin L. Marin, musical con George Murphy, Joan Davis, Nancy Kelly y Constance Moore, If you knew Susie (1948) de Gordon Douglas, comedia con Joan Davis, o La historia de Will Rogers (1952) de Michael Curtiz, comedia dramática biográfica con Will Rogers Jr. y Jane Wyman. Pionero en la televisión desde 1944, como lo había sido en la radio, realizó apariciones en ese medio hasta 1960. También destacó por sus actividades humanitarias.

Eddie Cantor estuvo casado con Ida Tobias desde 1914 hasta la muerte de ella en 1962. Tuvieron cinco hijas. El cómico falleció a los 72 años tras sufrir un segundo ataque cardiaco.

If you knew Susie, cómica composición de Buddy DeSylva y Joseph Meyer escrita para Al Jolson, se convirtió en un éxito tremendamente popular en la voz de Eddie Cantor, quien la grabó en 1925. Mucho después la cantaron artistas como Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra o Dean Martin.
