TELL ME IF YOU CAN
El cantante y compositor inglés Marc Almond cumple hoy 66 años. El 30 de septiembre de 1992 ofreció el concierto de su vida en el Royal Albert Hall de Londres. En el mismo, con una duración de dos horas, acompañado de orquesta y bailarines, presentó una amplia antología de lo más granado de su repertorio. En 1993, con el título 12 years of tears, Warner Music publicó un cd (con parte de su contenido) y un video con el concierto completo.
Uno de los momentos cumbre del espectáculo, ya cercano el final, fue su sensible e impresionante interpretación de What makes a man a man, versión de un singular tema compuesto y grabado por Charles Aznavour y publicado en 1972, primero en francés con el título "Comme ils disent", y después en inglés, con letra adaptada por Bradford Craig, con el título "What makes a man". La impactante canción, vendedora de 150.000 discos en su momento, fue pionera en abordar el tema entonces tabú de la homosexualidad y en describir musicalmente sin rodeos ni sarcasmo la historia (tan patética como conmovedora) de un hombre que lleva una doble vida: de día vive solo con su madre, ocupándose de tareas domésticas, y por la noche ejerce como travestí en un extraño bar, haciendo un show que incluye un desnudo integral, reuniéndose después para divertirse con sus amigos y regresando de madrugada solitario a casa para soñar con un amor nunca correspondido y sentirse despreciado e indefenso por su condición marginal.
Veinte años después, Almond interioriza y hace suya hasta el límite esta creación de Aznavour, transmite su intensa emoción y estremece a todo el auditorio del teatro londinense
