I CRIED A RIVER OVER YOU

Con ocasión del 82 cumpleaños de Barbra Streisand la recordamos en los comienzos de su carrera, cuando le faltaba justo un mes para cumplir los 21. En esta actuación del 24 de marzo de 1963 en el Show de Ed Sullivan interpreta en vivo su particular versión de Cry me a river (Arthur Hamilton), una torch song popularizada en 1953 por Julie London que encabezó su primer l.p., The Barbra Streisand Album (1963).

SUDDENLY THE CYCLONE CAME

La cantante, actriz y directora cinematográfica Barbra Streisand cumple hoy 81 años. En noviembre de 1962 publicó su primer single, en cuya cara B aparecía la canción When the sun comes out, composición de Harold Arlen con letra de Ted Koehler introducida en 1941 por la cantante Helen O'Connell con la Orquesta de Jimmy Dorsey. De dicho single de Streisand se imprimieron sólo 500 copias en Nueva York. Una regrabación de la misma se publicaría en agosto de 1963 en el long play The Second Barbra Streisand Album, del que se vendieron más de un millón de copias. Aquí se puede apreciar su interpretación en vivo de la misma en el Show de Ed Sullivan en junio de 1963.

La incombustible Barbra Streisand cumple hoy 80 años. El 6 de septiembre de 1986 ofreció en los jardines de su casa de Malibu, California, el concierto benéfico One voice, al que asistieron muchas celebridades y en el que interpretó trece canciones (posteriormente se emitiría en televisión y se editaría en disco, cd, video y dvd). La penúltima canción del mismo fue Happy days are here again (Milton Ager / Jack Yellen), un standard que data de 1929.

Con ocasión del 79 cumpleaños de la cantante y actriz estadounidense Barbra Streisand recordamos esta simpática secuencia de la película "Funny girl" (1968) de William Wyler, basada en el musical homónimo estrenado por ella en Broadway en 1964 con libreto de Isobel Lennart y canciones de Jule Styne (música) y Bob Merrill (letra). En ella evoca la vis cómica de la mítica Fanny Brice mientras interpreta patinando el regocijante número I'd rather be blue.

La cantante y actriz estadounidense Barbra Streisand cumple hoy 78 años. En 1968 protagonizó "Funny girl", film dirigido por William Wyler que adaptaba el musical del mismo título con libreto de Isobel Lennart y canciones de Jule Styne (música) y Bob Merrill (letra) estrenado en Broadway en 1964, con Streisand interpretando a la legendaria entertainer Fanny Brice, quien triunfó en las Ziegfeld Follies de principios del siglo XX. Una de sus canciones más conocidas es I'm the greatest star, la primera en solitario a cargo de la estrella neoyorquina en la película por la que ganó el Oscar a la mejor actriz.

ONE VERY SPECIAL PERSON

Barbra Streisand, que hoy cumple 77 años, emergió como estrella escénica en 1964 protagonizando en Broadway el musical "Funny girl" con libreto de Isobel Lennart y canciones de Jule Styne (música) y Bob Merrill (letra), basado en la vida de Fanny Brice, antigua luminaria de las Ziegfeld Follies a comienzos el siglo XX. People, su canción más conocida, fue nº 5 en las listas de Billboard y se convirtió en emblemática del repertorio de la artista neoyorquina. El musical fue llevado al cine cuatro años después por William Wyler y Streisand consiguió un Oscar a la mejor actriz por él.

En 1965 CBS emitió el aclamado especial televisivo "My name is Barbra" que ganó muchos premios, entre ellos cinco Emmys, uno de ellos para Barbra Streisand. Obviamente el programa incluyó la interpretación de People, su éxito del momento.

MEM'RIES LIGHT THE CORNERS OF MY MIND

Una de las canciones emblemáticas del repertorio de Barbra Streisand, que hoy cumple 76 años, es sin duda The way we were, composición de Alan Bergman y Marilyn Bergman (letra) y Marvin Hamlisch (música) para la película "Tal como éramos" (The way we were, 1973) de Sydney Pollack, que la artista neoyorquina  protagonizó junto a Robert Redford. El tema, ganador de un Oscar a la mejor canción, un Globo de Oro y un Grammy, puede ser escuchado como fondo de este montaje de secuencias de la citada película.

A modo de tributo, he aquí un fragmento de la película Ha nacido una estrella (1976), dirigida por Frank Pierson y coprotagonizada por Kris Kristofferson, donde cantaba Evergreen, composición suya a la que puso letra Paul Williams y que fue galardonada con el Oscar a la mejor canción.
