Tal día como hoy, el 28 de enero de 1985, un supergrupo de 45 prominentes artistas norteamericanos, bajo el nombre de USA for Africa, se reunieron para grabar la canción We are the world, escrita por Michael Jackson y Lionel Ritchie, con el objetivo de recaudar fondos para paliar la terrible hambruna de esos años en Africa, particularmente en Etiopía, que entre 1983 y 1985 había causado más de un millón de muertos. Quincy Jones fue el director y productor del proyecto, que se convertiría en histórico. El single se publicó el 7 de marzo de 1985 y obtuvo un éxito enorme, instantáneo y clamoroso. Además de en Estados Unidos, fue nº 1 en Australia, Bélgica, Canadá, España, Finlandia, Francia, Gran Bretaña, Irlanda, Italia, Noruega, Nueva Zelanda, Países Bajos, Portugal, Sudáfrica, Suecia y Suiza, nº 2 en Austria y Alemania y nº 3 en Dinamarca. La emotiva grabación en diversos formatos vendió alrededor de 20 millones de copias en todo el mundo y ganó cuatro premios Grammy.
