El polifacético Noël Coward escribió la letra y música de If love were all para la opereta "Bitter sweet" (1929), donde fue estrenada por la cantante británica Ivy St. Helier. Considerada autobiográfica, la canción ha sido descrita como 'auto-conmiserativa', así como 'una de las canciones populares más solitarias jamás escritas'. Sea como fuere, el tiempo convirtió esta bella muestra musical de desolación amorosa en standard. Judy Garland la interpretó en su mítico concierto del Carnegie Hall neoyorquino en 1961 y, a modo de homenaje a su diva favorita, Rufus Wainwright hizo lo propio en su recreación de dicho concierto repetida en vivo en seis ocasiones (dos en Nueva York, dos en Londres, una en París y una en Los Angeles) y editada en 2007 en el álbum Rufus does Judy at Carnegie Hall y el dvd Rufus! Rufus! Rufus! does Judy! Judy! Judy!: Live from the London Palladium. El clip siguiente corresponde a una actuación de 2010 en Londres del inefable Rufus Wainwright, quien hoy cumple 45 años.
