TRIBUTE TO MICHELLE PHILLIPS (Long Beach, California, US, 4-6-1944)
La cantante, compositora y actriz Michelle Phillips cumple hoy 73 años. Entre 1965 y 1968 formó parte del grupo vocal The Mamas & The Papas, que en cuatro años vendió alrededor de cuarenta millones de discos en todo el mundo. En la actualidad, Michelle es la única superviviente del cuarteto originariamente integrado por ella, John Phillips (1935/2001), Denny Doherty (1940/2007) y Cass Elliot (1941/1974).
En su breve trayectoria The Mamas & The Papas grabaron cinco álbumes de estudio y tuvieron hits como California dreamin' (1965), Monday, Monday (1966), I saw her again (1966), Words of love (1966), Dedicated to the one I love (1967) o Creeque Alley (1967), respectivamente números 4, 1, 5, 5, 2 y 5 en Billboard.
Posteriormente Michelle Phillips ha desarrollado una carrera de actriz de cine y televisión. Sus filmografía incluye títulos como La última película (1971) de Dennis Hopper, Dillinger (1973) de John Milius, Valentino (1977) de Ken Russell, Lazos de sangre (1979) de Terence Young, A lo loco y con la cara del otro (1980) de Robert Day, Cosecha salvaje (1981) de Robert E. Collins, Días rebeldes (1986) de Albert Magnoli, A rienda suelta (1989) de Joe Pytka, Secretos íntimos (1991) de Frank De Felitta, o Fuga mortal (1993) de Vic Armstrong.
Phillips se ha casado cinco veces, siendo sus maridos: John Phillips (1962-1969), su compañero, cofundador y líder de The Mamas & The Papas, con quien tuvo una hija; Dennis Hopper, actor y director con el que estuvo casada sólo ocho días en 1970; Robert Burch (1978-1982); Grainger Hines, con quien tuvo dos hijos; y, tras cuatro divorcios, Steven Zax, su actual esposo desde el año 2000.
Una exitosa versión de Dedicated to the one I love, composición de Lowman Pauling y Ralph Bass, anteriormente grabada por The 5 Royales (1957) y The Shirelles (1961), encabezó The Mamas & The Papas deliver (1967) el tercer álbum del cuarteto vocal de Los Angeles. Su single llegó al nº 2 en Billboard ese año.
